Etching - Alan Kitching

This is a scan of an etching of the great letterpress artist Alan Kitching, I have not printed it yet but learning about the process of etching has been really interesting. I decided to used hard ground on my etching plate. I really like the flowing quality that you can create, especially in the hair. I will update this post when printed. 

After Printing the etching above I decided it needed something else, so I filled in the Background to give the image more shape and better white space ratio.

Random Jungle Hand

This is my favourite frame from the sequence I created earlier. I think it works well even on it's own.

9 Frame Sequence

For this project we were to create a 9 image sequence to tell a story. My story is about a gorilla that is in the jungle, but then a hand comes down and picks him up to then reveal that the gorilla was not actually in the jungle, but in fact is on a table and is a salt shaker. I decided to use strictly found images, line drawing and stencils. The images haven't come out as strong as I wanted when I scanned them into the computer, they are actually very bold and impacting. 

In scene 1 i wanted to introduce the 'character' which is the gorilla, this image is a stencil I made with an image of the jungle behind it, but you can't really make out the jungle in the background, but I really like this image anyway. In the next frame I am introducing the setting which is the jungle, I thought it would be a good idea to have a wide shot image so that I could also introduce the human arm reaching in. In the 3rd frame I have then zoomed into the jungle and fully showing the gorilla in its surroundings. The next image is then trying to communicate the gorilla fighting back and also the table setting, I'm not too sure this explains exactly what I wanted but it was a very complicated story to put across in only 9 images, then I made a stencil of the hand coming down as from the gorillas point of view. In scene 6 the gorilla is being lifted out of the jungle, I then fully show the table setting with line drawings of a chair, plate and table legs, I hoped that the reference of the jungle on the table would help the viewer piece the story line together. The 8th scene is meant to show the gorilla standing next to the plate, I then skip quite a lot to the last image of the gorilla being tipped over the plate and sprinkles coming out of his head, this is meant to resemble the salt coming out.

This was a very interesting project, I don't feel that the plot has been shown in the best way but I feel I have created some very strong images in the process of this project.
